Equipment

  • 9x5 loaf pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Wire rack

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup melted butter plus more for pan
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 4 tbsp melted butter for coating
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar for coating
  • 1.5 tsp cinnamon for coating

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter a 9x5 loaf pan.
  • Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Mix eggs, milk, melted butter, vanilla, and sour cream in a separate bowl until smooth.
  • Fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients gently - stop as soon as no dry streaks remain. Do not overmix.
  • Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake for 50 to 55 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  • Coat the warm loaf with melted butter, then generously apply the cinnamon sugar mixture over all sides.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter - lumps are fine.
  • Apply the cinnamon sugar coating while the bread is still warm for best results.
  • Sour cream can be substituted with plain full-fat yogurt.
  • Freeze for up to 2 months wrapped tightly.
