Ingredients

Main Ingredients:

  • 4 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
  • Use whole cranberries. Both fresh and frozen work well for this recipe.
  • 4 cups water
  • Water is used to simmer the cranberries and extract their juice. You can add more later if you prefer a lighter flavor.
  • ½ to 1 cup sugar or sweetener of choice
  • Adjust based on how tart or sweet you like your juice. Maple syrup honey, or coconut sugar are excellent alternatives to refined sugar.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice optional
  • Enhances the tartness and balances the flavor. Adds a boost of vitamin C.

Optional Add-Ins:

  • ½ cup orange juice – for a sweeter citrusy flavor
  • Cinnamon stick or a slice of fresh ginger – for a spiced twist
  • Fresh mint leaves – for a refreshing finish when serving
  • Apple juice – a naturally sweet blend for mellowing tartness

Instructions

Step 1: Rinse the Cranberries

  • Place the cranberries in a colander and rinse them thoroughly under cold water. Remove any stems or soft, discolored berries if using fresh.

Step 2: Simmer the Cranberries

  • In a large saucepan, combine 4 cups of water and 4 cups of cranberries. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cranberries burst and soften completely.

Step 3: Mash the Cranberries

  • Once the cranberries have softened, use a spoon or potato masher to gently mash them in the pot. This helps release more juice and deepens the flavor.

Step 4: Strain the Juice

  • Place a fine mesh sieve or strainer over a large bowl or pitcher. Carefully pour the cranberry mixture through the sieve, pressing the pulp with the back of a spoon to extract as much juice as possible.
  • Optional: For extra-smooth juice, strain again through cheesecloth or a nut milk bag.

Step 5: Sweeten the Juice

  • While the juice is still warm, stir in your desired sweetener—start with ½ cup of sugar and add more to taste. You can also use maple syrup, honey, or your preferred natural alternative.

Step 6: Add Lemon or Orange Juice (Optional)

  • For extra brightness and balance, add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or ¼ cup orange juice and stir well.

Step 7: Cool and Store

  • Let the juice cool to room temperature, then transfer it to a clean glass jar or bottle. Seal tightly and refrigerate.
